If you love boating, the ocean, exploring and the thought of being secluded – then living aboard might be the most fulfilling thing you will ever do. Here’s a few things to consider:
Will you save money?
That depends on your circumstances and your lifestyle. Since everyone is so different, it’s important to price everything up yourself. What you can expect to pay:
- Boat payment
- License and registration costs
- Slip fees (The cost of berthing your boat at a marina, pier or float)
- Routine and unplanned boat maintenance
- Operating costs
- Living costs (Food and that kind of thing)
Can you get internet/WiFi on a boat?
Yes, Internet may be available at your pier, or you may be able to tether from your phone if you are docked close enough to shore and have enough data included in your plan.
Can you live aboard all year round?
In Australia, absolutely. Our winters don’t nearly get as cold as other parts of the world, but of course that depends on where you’re located in Australia. The important thing here is to be prepared. Speak to other boat owners in your area to find out what is necessary, such as heating with proper installation and venting. You don’t want your heater sucking out all your oxygen while you sleep.
What’s the lifestyle like?
What we’re hearing from boaties is that life on board is what you make it. Yes there will be times of stress and your patience may be tested by the weather, your boat and those around you, but there’s plenty to love about living aboard. From the sounds of rain, the gentle rocking, total seclusion and the perfect sunset – you’ll only really know once you try it.
